I was shopping at LuLu’s the other day and was amazed at the variety of Juices they have stocked up in their shelves, enough to make any juice lover go crazy! While us Gulfies haven’t yet given up on our soft drinks (Pepsi,Coke and the likes), there are quite a few going the juice way..so having a bottle or two in your house is a real good idea especially if you are entertaining guests at home. But, pickin up a lip smacking fruit juice can be far different from picking up a healthy option. You might want to look beyond the fancy shmancy names and packaging especially if you want to stay clear from serving your guests a sugar packed, “fruit flavoured drink” (even if front labels says 100% juice) . While researching about juices, I was surprised to know that even labels which say “made from fruit concentrate” are a bad choice!
The key is reading the label at the back…
While your ideal option for fruit juice would be straight out of a fruit blender, it’s not always convenient. Your next best option would be to go organic but those would be typically expensive. So, look for a juice with minimal or no additional additives, flavorings or preservatives. Another term to look out for is HPP or High Pressure Processing- This method manages to retain vitamins and nutrients in the juice as well as maintains the juice freshness.
Some of your safe bet juice options are fruits with high anti-oxidants like Blueberry, Cranberry, Cherry or Pomegranate. The next best are grapefruit, papaya, mango and orange (if its good quality)
