Watch out for the bread you eat !
We Goans love our bread, its part of our staple for the day. Pao, katrea pao, bakri, poi its whats near to our heart. But the latest finding of ingredients that goes into making our dear bread are rather alarming.
The latest study by the Centre for Science and Environment in New Delhi, found that bread samples collected contained alarming levels of toxic chemicals. According to recent study, bread samples had high levels of Potassium bromate, which was declared a possible carcinogen (a substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue) and potassium iodate (causes Thyroid problems) were found in several brands of breads. The samples were taken from across the city in Delhi. Whether is a similar story in Goa, we don’t know yet.
The CSE study is based on analysis of different samples of bread, including white bread, brown bread, sandwich bread, multi-grain bread and ready-to-eat burger and pizza bread. Potassium iodate and Potassium bromate are banned in several countries however, India continues to allow the use of it.
What next steps the Government takes in this regard is something we need to wait and watch.
