Waterfall Rappelling at Cotigao
A new experience – Waterfall Rappelling (Everyone should give it a try)
By Jovita Fernandes
All it took was a phone call from my friend, who said: Hey Jovi, we are going waterfall rappelling on 29th of January would you like to join? And from the adventurous side of me it was a prompt Yes. I knew nothing of waterfall rappelling yet wanted to try this new activity and wanted that Sunday to not be just any other routine Sunday.
This trip was organized by “OffTrail adventures” with the lady Bianca as the in-charge. The bus left at 8.15 in the morning from Margao and we reached the location site i.e. Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary at 10 am, I was excited and yet nervous about how things would be.
On reaching we were given a briefing by Bianca about our journey to the waterfall and she told us that it would take us walking of approx. 1 hour 30 minutes to get there. It was a steep climb but we had a lot of fun on the way, the volunteers of OffTrail adventures were there to land a helping hand to us whenever required and were guiding us all along the way. We did take small breaks in between as the climb needed quite a lot of energy.
Finally after climbing up the slope it was time to go downhill and reach the waterfall. Once at the waterfall everything seemed so worth it and then it was time for the most awaited part – “waterfall rappelling”. Bianca and her team had practice sessions with us using the harness on so that we gained confidence. For those who feared about how strong the ropes would be to take their weight she told us that they were special ropes that could take the weight of 2 and a half elephants and we need not worry. The carrying capacity of the ropes was 1kiloNewton.
Waterfall Rappelling was done turn by turn, finally my turn arrived and though the adrenaline rush was high there was a little nervousness too.
But as I set foot on the waterfall and went rappelling down the feeling was amazing, the depth of the waterfall was about 30 mts but I covered the same in 7.5 minutes the fastest in my batch of 15 participants. The instructors said I did really well this being my first time, I felt so thrilled at it.
This for sure was a memorable experience. It’s not just about being adventurous it’s much more beyond that, for some it was about conquering their fear of heights, while for some it was overcoming the fear of water but above all it was that feeling of accomplishment one gets by doing something out of the box. I believe we should all sometimes take a plunge in life because unless you are willing to take that plunge you won’t land into beautiful destinations and make your life worth living!
