While skill will get you far, every good artist needs quality stained glass tools in order to get the job done quickly and even more effeciently. Unfortunately, with literally thousands of different products and tools on the market, its hard to figure out which one will meet your needs, your experience level, and at a cost that doesn't break your budget. We'll talk about the basic tools that you need and the ones that you can put off until your experience level rises. As you can guess, the stained glass is a very important ingredient for any glass artist. The absolute leader in the marketplace is the Spectrum Glass Company. They typically are the favored manufacturer for a number of reasons. They are always on the cutting edge of new colors, designs, and textures. They also have an extremely large distribution to retail stores which makes finding the products extremely easy. Spectrum Glass is also extremely easy to work with and the glass always has very high quality. Its the choice for most serious stained glass artisans. A quality stained glass grinder is something that you might want to consider as you progress with your projects. You need to consider how much you'll use it on an annual basis to figure which one is right for you. One manufacturer of quality grinders is Glastar stained glass grinders. They have been around a long time and they have a great reputation in the glass market. The grinder is used to shape the glass after it has been cut to a rough shape. While you can certainly get by without a grinder for awhile, depending on the number of projects that you plan on doing, it will save you a lot of time. Any artist that works with stained glass can tell you, you will be doing a lot of cutting. A stained glass saws is likely one of the more expensive tools you will buy for your hobby. A glass saw is a tool that most artists will eventually graduate into at some point. Most artists typically choose to buy this after they have a good stained glass grinder, but that just varies from person to person and depends on your needs. A good saw certainly isn't the magic pill, but it makes your life a little easier. Its great for more detailed cuts or when you need to be very precise, but you will still 'score and break' by hand quite often as its just easier to do so. I should mention that you do not want to buy everything all at once, even if its at a discount stained glass supplies store. There are a lot of different tools that will make your life easier, but I like to buy one tool per trip so I can take my time with it and learn how to use it. Plus, as your skills build, you will refine what you're looking for in your glass tools. That's why I don't like to go out and buy everything at once, I like to really know what I'm looking for and what will be the best tool for my needs. Hopefully these tips will guide you along with your purchase of your stained glass tools.
